The number of teams within an age group/gender, the divisions in which the teams are entered and the numbers of players on each team are selected to best match the players. The selections are influenced by the total number of registrations in the age group/gender, the abilities of the players, the number of on field players e.g. 3 v 3, 4 v 4 etc, and by the age, commitment, skill and fitness level of the players.
The goal is to provide athletes with as much opportunity as possible to develop their skills through their soccer playing experience with Signal Hill Soccer before moving to our partner for the older teams, West Hills United. Only players in U8 competitive (and ALL U8 for indoor) and U10 are evaluated. Younger players are placed on teams according to “play with” requests, location and gender/age.
The remainder of this information relates only to players where players are evaluated and place on teams accordingly. Player Evaluations and previous team placement will affect where your athlete is positioned. All new players are evaluated alongside returning ones.
Players may be shifted if coaches and Technical staff determine a player was placed incorrectly. This is at the discretion of the Technical Committee. All requests for special consideration will be taken under advisement as per the Registration form.
Evaluation Process For U8 CMSA and U10
The evaluation process has been designed to create a fair, equitable and transparent evaluation in the interest of participating youth.
A Lead Evaluator, appointed by the Technical Committee, coordinates the evaluation according to the Technical Evaluation Process. The evaluators are experienced coaches who have typically coached teams at the age group.
U10 through U14 players are assessed in a number of skill/athletic tests and scrimmage game type situations. U14-U18 will be assessed in scrimmage game type situations only.
- Stage A – Skill and athletic tests
- Stage B – Scrimmage 1
- Stage C – Scrimmage 2
- U10 aged players and below – Play ups not permitted unless there are exceptional circumstances. All requests will be handled on a case by case basis and any decisions made will be at the sole discretion of the Technical and Executive committee.
Player Team Selection
The players are selected to teams based on their evaluation results, technical staff input, coaches input, and their commitment levels. Due consideration is given to; putting players of the same age (birth year) together, having good coaches on every team, keeping past players together to foster friendships and development, having friends play together, or accommodating a players other commitments, On occasion a player may be asked to play for a higher age group (play up), but this is at the sole discretion of the Technical Committee.
All disputes as to team placement should be directed via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. Each individual case will be dealt with in conjunction with the senior evaluator. It is our hope that the issue can be resolved at this level. If you are unable to reach a consensus; further investigation can only occur if you direct the dispute in writing to the President of West Hills United Soccer.
After evaluations are completed and the players on the teams are being finalized, the coaches for each team are selected. Coaches are commonly parents and are selected based upon coaching experience, training courses attended, playing experience, and past performances according to feedback we receive from players and parents. We work towards having a minimum of two and ideally three coaches per team.
